Move from Float to Pike

Export Float’s people and project templates, the schedule and the Logged report, map them to Pike templates, and connect the ledger you invoice from. Budget five to six weeks.

Available now

Float exports people and projects as pre-filled import templates, the schedule as CSV, and logged time and budgets from Report. Each file maps to a Pike template.

  1. 1On People, click Import → Upload a file, tick Pre-populate with the existing team to update people and click Download people template. Do the same on Projects with Pre-populate with existing projects.
  2. 2On Report, open the Projects view and export table data for budget fee, budget hours and logged fee. On Pro and Enterprise, export the People view’s logged time tracking data for every person entry by date.
  3. 3On the Schedule, click Share → Export, choose .CSV for Excel and export by week. Each export covers up to one year, so export future allocations from today forward.
  4. 4Upload customers, projects, phases, members, then time entries and allocations under Workspace settings → Integrations → CSV, using the Float column mapping.

The project template covers active projects only, and Starter plans export Scheduled data only. Check your plan before you count on logged time or expenses in the export.

Available now

Float ended its direct QuickBooks integration in February 2024, so Float has no live link to your ledger. Connect the ledger finance invoices from to Pike, and Pike imports customers and invoice history from it.

  1. 1In Pike, go to Workspace settings → Integrations, add the accounting system finance invoices from and run Import data for customers and invoice history.
  2. 2Use the ledger customer number for each Float client before you upload projects, so every project links to a customer with invoice history.
  3. 3From cutover, finance invoices from Pike using approved time, in place of the Float logged report.

Float connects to HubSpot and Salesforce through Zapier only. If a Zap creates Float projects from deals, turn it off at cutover and connect the CRM to Pike.

Float resolves bill rates from role to person to project to phase, and the most specific rate wins. Float stores role bill rates on rate cards in Data studio, person rates on each profile’s Rates tab, and project rates on the project’s Team tab. Set the Pike `hourlyRate` from the project rate where one exists, and from the role rate otherwise.

Float resolves cost rates from role to person, with effective dates for role cost rates. Build Pike cost profiles from the cost rate column of the people template.

Float budgets a project as Time & materials, Fixed fee or Fixed hours, at project, phase or task level. Map Time & materials to `timeAndMaterials` and Fixed fee to `fixedFee`, and fill `budgetHours` for Fixed hours projects.

The plan

Seven steps out of Float

The same steps as the main migration guide, with this tool's screens and settings.

  1. Week 1

    Migration owner, finance

    1

    1Week 1 · Migration owner, finance

    Freeze scope and export

The files you export in week one are what Pike imports. Freeze edits in Float before you export.

    • Download the people and project templates with existing data pre-filled.
    • Export the Projects report table data, the People report logged time tracking data per year, and the schedule from today forward.
    • Write down the export date and keep the raw files unchanged in one folder with two owners.

    2Week 1 to 2 · Operations lead

    Clean the exported files

Work in copies of the Float files. Most of the work is joining people to emails and budgets to projects.

    • Build one customer row per Float client with a ledger customer number, and add it to every project row.
    • Add `budgetAmount` from the Projects report and set `billingType` from each project’s budget type. Use the project budget once, since phase and task budgets repeat on each report line.
    • Join the schedule and logged time files to the people template on name, so every row carries an email.

    Build the workspace shell

Admins set up Pike before the first upload, so imported projects have a team and a rate on day one.

    • Create teams and positions that match your Float departments and roles. Invite admins and project owners only.
    • Connect the ledger finance invoices from and run Import data for customers and invoice history.
    • Set a cost profile for each person from the Float cost rate in the people template.

    Upload in dependency order

Upload under Workspace settings → Integrations → CSV. Pike reports a row it cannot match with its line number.

    • Upload customers, projects, phases and members, then logged time one file per year, then allocations.
    • Fix rejected rows and upload them again. Pike matches each row on its project number or email and updates the record.
    • Compare three projects with Float: budget, bill rate, last month’s logged hours and next month’s scheduled hours.

One team in Pike for a sprint

CSV has no ongoing sync, so the pilot team plans and logs in Pike while everyone else works in Float.

    • The pilot team logs time and books allocations in Pike only. Everyone else works in Float until cutover.
    • Finance approves pilot time in Time admin and sends one invoice from Pike.
    • Compare the pilot team’s utilization in Pike with the Float People report for the same weeks.

    Cutover weekend

Close Float on Friday evening and upload every hour logged there since your first export.

    • Friday: lock logged time under Company settings → Admin → Time tracking, so nobody edits past entries.
    • Export logged time from your first export date to Friday and the schedule from Monday forward, leave out the pilot team, and upload both.
    • Archive people in Float, then lower the paid seat count under Plans & billing. Archiving does not reduce paid seats on its own.

    First month-end in Pike

Done when finance closes a month without opening Float.

    • Approve all time, invoice every billable project from Pike, and check each invoice appears in your ledger.
    • Export every report and template once more for the archive.
    • Cancelling Float deletes the company and its data at once, with no refund for prepaid time. The Account Owner deletes it only after the archive is complete.

Questions

Moving from Float: common questions

Why are archived projects missing from our project export?

The pre-filled project template covers active projects only. Check whether the Projects report lists the archived projects you keep, or add them to the projects file by hand.

Why does our budget column total too high?

When a project budgets by phase or task, Float repeats the budget on every line of the CSV. Take each project’s budget once before you fill `budgetAmount`.

Can we export logged time on the Starter plan?

No. Starter plans export Scheduled data only. Pro and Enterprise plans export Logged data, including time tracking details.

Does archiving people in Float lower our bill?

Archiving frees a seat and Float retains the person’s reporting data, but Float does not reduce paid seats on its own. Lower the seat count under Plans & billing.

Can we cancel Float and keep our data there?

No. Float cancels a subscription by deleting the company and its data, and only the Account Owner can do it. Finish every export first.

Support through the move and after it

Migration support comes with every plan: we map your exports, run the imports with you and check the counts before cutover. After go-live, hypercare until the first month-end closes in Pike. Then we hand over to your admins and stay close for as long as you use Pike. Email hello@usepike.com with your source tool and we will say which route fits.
